The Student Committee of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) announces two openings for officer positions beginning in March 2009: Vice-chair/Chair-Elect, Communications Coordinator and Treasurer. These positions will begin at the upcoming...
I am a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at University of Florida. My research looks at the intersections of anthropology, historical methods, and new media to investigate historic instances of racially charged collective violence. This includes tracing the historical legacies of racism and bigotry and how it is translated into structural violence in modern US society.
I am interested in a suite of complimentary, but rarely combined, group of theoretical frameworks. This includes critical race theory and critical theory in general, diaspora and cultural studies, liberation sociology, and anthropological approaches to violence; including witnessing, truth-telling, and so forth.
I also draw on a range of methodological interests. My specific technical background is in computer mapping and 3D modelling for archeology. Recently, I am combining this with a growing knowledge of engaged visual anthropology and exploring the use of new media technologies to open conversations in the local community about race and racism.
My PhD looks examines historic lynchings and race riots, particularly in north Florida, alongside modern injustices such as hidden slavery and the gentrification of black neighborhoods. I see a historical continuum connecting these sorts of injustices and believe that we can better combat them by understanding their historical trajectory and communicating that to the wider public.
I teach regularly (at the University of Florida and internationally). I am heavily invested in teaching a course called Academic Activism, jointly offered by the Anthropology and Honors departments at UF (view the syllabus at http://activism.little-yeti.com).
I have been involved in a number of participatory projects and social movements in the US; including an ongoing engagement with the Students for a Democratic Society at UF, creating a local engaged anthropologists group, and am writing an article about the use of counter-mapping during the 2007 anti-war protests in Washington D.C. I will present on this last interest at the 2009 AAA in Philadelphia.
I also serve as the Communications Coordinator for SfAA Student Committee!
